The Seventh Day Adventist Church (SDA) has donated livestock to some underprivileged people on August 3 in Maun.
Senior assistant council secretary, Ms Mogomotsi Seemule commended the SDA church for assisting the North West District Council (NWDC) in its mandate of helping the needy.
The SDA church donated six cattle, 13 goats and 22 chickens shared amongst 13 beneficiaries who were identified through the Social and Community Development (S&CD) office.
The cattle were divided between three beneficiaries who got two each, the goats were shared between three per person, while the chickens about four per person.
The awarding was done through a raffle.
Ms Seemule said NWDC had about 1 876 underprivileged people who were registered and a total of about 7 186 people who get help from the council as orphans, people living with disabilities and people in remote areas.
Therefore, she appreciated SDA church for the donations, which she said were one of a kind as they encouraged self-reliance on part of the beneficiaries.
Ms Seemule pointed out that government was challenged in assisting the needy people as the numbers keept on increasing, a sign that beneficiaries failed to graduate to a better life.
In his remarks, SDA overseer pastor, Dr Kenaope Kenaope said all the donations were contributed by members of SDA from Maun.
Dr Kenaope said SDA church upheld the social corporate responsibility initiative, and was not only focused on uplifting its church members.
He observed that the church had in the past donated to some institutions such as Gumare Hospital in the past.
Batawana representative, Kgosi Charles Letsholathebe also appreciated SDA church for remembering the needy people.
Kgosi Letsholathebe encouraged the beneficiaries to avoid consumption or sale of the livestock, but rather keep the animals to increase. ENDS
