Southern district agric show on

02 Aug 2017

All roads lead to Kanye this week for the annual district agricultural show sthat started yesterday, August 02.

Speaking in an interview on Tuesday, show chairperson, Mr Bobbie Gaseitsewe said the event was intended to inspire residents to take farming as a business.

Mr Gaseitsewe said they have partnered with the private sector with a view to jump-start the show.

He added that they also want to create a lasting impact on the farming community.

He noted that agriculture was a source of employment, food and livelihood for a majority of Batswana.

He argued that with support from the private sector and capable individuals, they hoped to turn the showground into a bee-hive of farm related activities all year round and create employment for residents.

“We want young people to know that agriculture is the way to go, and I am happy that a good number of youth have shown interest to take part in the show,” he said.

Under the theme: Agriculture redefined, he said they were of the view that farming could stimulate the economy, adding that opportunities were still abound in the sector.

Mr Gaseitsewe noted that they had introduced horse racing, livestock parades and sales in an attempt to make the event more attractive.

He said they would also avail stalls for poverty eradication beneficiaries to share ideas, experiences and market their products.

Categories for exhibitions include livestock, small stock, poultry and crops among others.

He urged residents to come in numbers.

The first agricultural show in the country was started by Kgosi Bathoen II with the help of Mr Russel England, the first agricultural demonstrator in the country.

Mr Gaseitsewe’s committee is now expected to pick up the pieces and re-build for the future. ENDS
