Transformation important aspect

27 Jul 2017

It is the responsibility of all Batswana to integrate themselves into the global village.

Speaking at the primary school heads conference recently, Minister of Basic Education, Dr Unity Dow said Botswana’s education system had always been sort after by many in the SADC region.

However, she said the only way to progress was to adopt a education system that would rival that of the best in the world.

“Our plan is to invest in technologies that will assist us in educating at the highest academic levels, and that will integrate learning into our daily life and more importantly innovation into our schools,” she said.

She said as the country celebrates achieving almost universal access to primary education under the Millennium Goals, it was now faced with the successful implementation of SDG 4 to realise quality basic education for all, and to develop a culture of lifelong learning.

Dr Dow said school heads, by virtue of their position, were change agents in education, and that they must be ready to embrace change and try new methods to seek different outcomes.

“You must be prepared to make mistakes in the search of an education designed to recognise the latent talent in every child and develop them to their best,” she noted.

She urged them to be champions of child centred learning, describing it as learning through discovery, child friendly environments, e-learning, special education opportunities, remediation and learner support initiatives. ENDS
