Mahalapye police station construction still ongoing

26 Jul 2017

Parliament has been told that the refurbishment of old Mahalapye Police Station suffered some delays but construction is still ongoing.

Answering a Parliamentary question recently, the Minister of Defence, Justice and Security, Mr Shaw Kgathi said the refurbishment entailed among other things, minor demolitions on some parts of the building.

However, it was established that the building was unstable and needed some re-designs, he said; adding that a decision was therefore taken to demolish the entire building hence the delayed implementation.

The minister said the project is expected to be completed by the end of August 2017.

He stated also that Chubb doors for the holding cells and armory are part of the refurbishment works; pointing out that the perimeter fence forms part of the project and will therefore be installed.

Mr Kgathi was answering a question from Mahalapye West MP Mr Joseph Molefe.

Mr Molefe had asked if the minister was aware that the completion of the refurbishment of the old police station in Mahalapye was delayed and also asked the minister  the cause of the delay as well as when the refurbishment would be completed.

Mr Molefe also asked if the police station would be functional without the Chubb doors for holding cells and armory.

He also wanted to understand if the police staff housing would be safe without a perimeter security fence. ENDS
