The church’s role is not within the four walls of the congregation, but in the community, says Assistant Minister of Health and Wellness, Mr Dikgang Makgalemele
“Those who need you the most are in multitudes out there compared to those of your denomination,” said Mr Makgalemele when addressing the annual conference of the Anglican Churches Mothers Union in Gabane on July 22.
He said the government welcomed partnerships that would advance the national objectives of economic and human development
Mr Makgalemele urged the Mothers Union to continue to support family life and to work towards a better Botswana free of hunger, poverty and disease.
“I therefore encourage you to assist government to actively curb the existing and growing social ills,” he pleaded.
He noted that the objectives of the Mothers Union were with the plight of women, developing their parenting skills, campaigning against human trafficking, child abuse and drug abuse.
He stressed that government alone could not manage, and that it would continue to seek partnerships and collaborations with faith based organisations towards common solutions.
Mr Makgalemele said he looked forward to the church’s ideas on caring for the sick, rehabilitation of prisoners, providing shelter for the needy, poverty eradication, health and wellness.
For her part, Mothers Union president, Ms Agnes Nccaagae noted that the conference was made up of delegates from all parts of the country.
She said last year Mothers Union celebrated 140 years of existence, adding that they have various social project such as taking care of orphans and building shelter for the needy and taking care of the needy.
The conference was held under the theme: But you call me Lord Lord and yet you do not do what I tell you. ENDS
