TaficChiefs take on Zimbabwe teams

Francistown deputy mayor, Godisang Radisigo on Friday launched the Super Power Cup 2017 in Francistown.

The tournament is scheduled to take place on August 19 at the Francistown Sports Complex.

Speaking at the launch and draw for the cup recently, Radisigo said the tournament will feature two of Botswana’s top clubs; Tafic and Mochudi Centre Chiefs alongside Zimbabwe’s giants Bulawayo Highlanders and Harare Dynamos.

“This city continues to attract initiatives of this magnitude and let me urge the business community of Francistown not to disappoint. 

The business community should play an important role in sport development because sport continues to prove that it can employ people not only athletes,” he said

Chairperson of the First Division North, Mpenzeni Sambandawe said there was need to see local teams prosper and grow in their field, adding that starting small and growing big helped because in football numbers counted.

Sambandawe further explained that the initiative was part of the city’s vision 2022, adding that the growth of football in Francistown was impressive.

He further noted that Francistown was an economic hub that continued to grow in different areas.

Francistown-based team Tafic FC will play against Zimbabwe’s Dynamos FC whereas Mochudi Centre chiefs will play against Highlanders.

Tafic FC vice chairperson, Bushy Moswate noted that the tournament signaled the formation of an alliance that could improve local talent. He said this was an initiative aimed at developing football in Botswana.

With money accrued from the tournament, the aim is to build an academy for young football players. ENDS
