Shortage of accommodation at Dukwi and Nxakato
23 Jul 2017
Assistant Minister of Basic Education, Mr Moiseraele Goya says he is aware that there is shortage of boarding accommodation facilities at Dukwi and Nxakato junior secondary schools.
Answering a question in Parliament from MP for Nata-Gweta, Mr Polson Majaga, Mr Goya said Dukwi’s hostels were oversubscribed by 21 per cent and Nxakato hostels by 80 per cent.
Minister Goya however said he was not aware of an immediate health hazard posed by the extra numbers of students, noting that there was a general health hazard from unhygienic dwelling places which could affect any group of people staying together.
He said as such schools were advised to keep the hostels clean to avoid the spread of such diseases, noting that his ministry would however address issues of overcrowding in schools through the ESP in 2018/19 financial year.
MP Majaga had asked the minister if he was aware that there was a serious shortage of accommodation in boarding facilities at Dukwi and Nxakato schools and to state whether the overcrowding of students did not pose health hazard to students.
He also wanted to know what measures were in place to rectify the situation. ENDS
