Majwe mine donates safety clothing

23 Jul 2017

Majwe mine has recently donated safety clothing to Gweta, Tsokatshaa and Zoroga disaster committees.

The committees played a major role during cyclone Dineo early this year which left the Nata/Gweta constituency among the hard hit areas.

In his welcome remarks, Kgosi Keletlhobogile Baatholeng of Gweta commended the community for their efforts of volunteering including the business community who offered assistance.

“I also applaud public officers who dedicated their time to save victims from the disaster,” he said adding that this year’s disaster was the worst since 2008 when an almost similar situation occurred.

He therefore appealed to National Disaster Management Office to capacitate the local disaster committees and offices that were the first to respond with necessary resources.

Sharing the sentiments was Gweta disaster committee chairperson, Mr Ledule Baraki who explained they were affected from January 23 this year until mid-April when the situation subsided.

He also acknowledged the support they received from different entities across the country noting that in partnership with volunteers in the affected communities they were able to handle the situation well with no fatalities were recorded.

He said in 2014, they dealt with veld fires which affected about 10 000 hectors of land in Gweta and Tsokatshaa.

“Even during that period, the spirit of volunteerism prevailed among the people and we managed to put out the fires,” he said.

For his part disaster officer, Mr Maeletso Pego said while working with the three disaster committees, the committee members requested for protective clothing suitable for disaster periods.

He said the plea was extended to other entities and Majwe Mining responded to the call by giving 70 protective clothes.

He applauded the committees for the role they play of ensuring safety of the communities they lived in. ENDS
