Scores of teachers who recently attended the Fullbright Distinguished Awards Training workshop have welcomed the idea of introducing the outcome based education which will among others do away with automatic progression of students.

The teachers spoke in support of the notion on Wednesday after learning that the country would soon introduce the outcome based learning.

The said for a long time the current system had been disadvantaging some learners. During a presentation on Education and Training Sectors Strategic Plan (ETSSP) on inclusive education, principal education officer from South East Region, Mr Lesoto Sebogodi said the country was working on implementing the outcome based learning.

He said the outcome based education called for the ceasing of the automatic progression of learners.

Mr Sebogodi said leaners would have to repeat or choose their career path, either vocational education or the academics.

He said the system will help leaners as they will no longer have to do loads of subject which are irrelevant to their career path adding that teachers would have to profile leaners to identify their talents.

However he noted that all leaners would have to complete basic education before progressing to either senior secondary education, tertiary education or vocational training.

Furthermore ETSSP will transform the country’s education from resource to knowledge based society.

He said the ETSSP would pay attention to inclusive education and lifelong learning goals and address issues of access, quality, equity, accountability in the education sector.

He noted that the country’s inclusive education policy was developed in 2011 and launched in 2013 adding that it provide the direction for the education sector. Another speaker Mr Leshe Toteng said there was need for teachers to be prepared to deal with today’s challenges, programmes and policies.

Mr Toteng said the modern teachers should be equipped for the implementation of the inclusive education for all.

The workshop which was facilitated to familiarise teachers with education and training sector strategic plan on inclusive education, equip teachers with skills of inclusive and lifelong learning goals.

It was also intended to give teachers principles to support different classroom practice and to also familiarise them with online resources that could be used in teaching. ENDs
