Residents receive blankets from Chinese

Francistown South constituents have received 200 blankets from the Chinese Chamber of Commerce in Francistown on Sunday.

Vice Chairperson of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce in Francistown, Mr Wei Huang said the association was committed to handing out more donations in different areas in the city.

He said they would be giving out necessities to local vulnerable groups to help them get through the cold winter.

“Today, we are pleased to come to the Francistown South constituency, we have prepared 200 blankets worth more than P20 000. We hope that these blankets will add warmth to everyone’s winter,” he said.

Mr Wei further stated that the Chinese community in Francistown was mostly in the trade and retail sector, adding that they brought value for money as well as create employment for the locals.

He explained that the Chinese community was committed to promoting the development of the economic prosperity, cultural and educational activities as well as the community service in Botswana.

Member of Parliament for Francistown South, Mr Wynter Mmolotsi said his office saw it fit to partner with the Chinese Chamber of Commerce to donate more blankets after 50 blankets were left by President Lt Gen. Dr Seretse Khama Ian Khama in one of his recent visits to Francistown, which left residents at conflict over the 50 blankets.

He urged the Chinese community to make the initiative an annual event, indicating that his constituency was made up of 38 000 people, more than 75 per cent being unemployed.

He said the gesture would go a long way in cushioning the beneficiaries against the harsh winter weather.

“On that basis, I plead with you to continue assisting us in any way possible. I will keep in touch with the association to see what help they can offer,” he said. ENDS
