Nip corruption in the bud
09 Jul 2017
Directorate on Corruption and Economic Crime (DCEC) deputy director general, Ms Botlhale Makgekgenene has said it is upon organisational managers to ensure that corruption is minimal to non-existent in their departments.
Speaking at Ministry of Health and Wellness corruption prevention commitee training in Francistown recently, Ms Makgekgenene said leaders must understand and comprehend a strong correlation between anti-corruption and good performance, adding that they must put in place robust control measures to ensure that corruption activities do not hinder organisational achievements.
She further explained that management was expected to formulate strategic anti-corruption institutional programmes, which included development of policies and tools for anti-corruption.
“Formulation of the institutional anti-corruption programme will give way for the development of the anti-corruption operational agenda that will allow participation by general staff membership and key stakeholders,” she added.
In his address, an anti-corruption consultant, Mr Tymon Katlholo of Tyedo Investments informed stakeholders that the way a leader conducts himself was what would encourage or discourage corruption in the organisation, adding that any organisation would break or succeed because of its leadership.
Mr Katlholo further noted that setting the tone through prevention regulations alone was not enough, adding that one had to lead by example because people tend to do what they see rather than what they hear.
“One should first be recognised as a leader for people to buy into what you are saying. A leader should work hard to earn respect from their juniors,” he noted. ENDS
