Gaborone City Council in collaboration with Ablemots Consultancy will host the first Annual Gaborone Mayor’s Charity Mass Ride on July 7-8.

When addressing a press conference in Gaborone on July 4, the mayor of Gaborone, Kagiso Thutlwe said the mass ride was a noble idea which came after the 2014 Paris Mayor’s declaration in which mayors were supposed to be leading in issues affecting their societies.

“One of the challenges affecting our societies is an issue of HIV and as mayors we have taken the lead in seeing to it that our people are testing so that they are ready for the 90-90-90 programme,” he said.

Thutlwe said the ride would start at the Grand Palm and would have 30 minutes stop overs at old Naledi, White city, Village ,Ledumang and Gaborone West where riders would interact, encourage give out food hampers to different charity organisations.

“This one is a mass ride with a purpose as we will be riding  and giving back to the society,” the mayor said.

For his part, Ablemots Consultancy representative, Abram Motswagae said motor cycle mayoral rides were a popular way internationally for mayors to interact with their communities.

Motswagae also said if utilised well, motor cycles could be an inexpensive way to move around the city as well as curb congestion caused by too many cars on the roads.

He urged bikers from across the nation and Gaborone city dwellers to come out in large numbers to support what he termed a good cause. ENDS
