Respect Sir Seretse Khama Day

03 Jul 2017

Kgosi Serogola Seretse has advised residents of Serowe to take the commemoration of Sir Seretse Khama Day seriously, lest they become a laughing stock.

He expressed disappointment following the commemoration’s poor attendance at Serowe main kgotla on July 1.

Although the commemoration is in its 11th year, this year’s event was nothing to write home about. It started late, and attracted only a handful of residents, something that Kgosi Serogola and other leaders did not take lightly.

“I am so disappointed to see hardly any residents here, despite the fact that you are expected to be the one rallying behind this day. Even some headmen are not in attendance, yet they are supposed to be main role players. I am so ashamed of the turnout.”

Kgosi Serogola said it was disappointing that Bangwato were dragging their feet, yet they were the ones who made the request years ago to observe the day.

He said Bangwato should be accountable and be keen to preserve their culture, which is evidently waning.

“If you cannot sing your national anthem, how can you respect it.  You are losing your identity and I am advising you to step up and put your house in order.”

He said their lack of interest in commemorating is an indication that the  day might not be observed in the future.

The chief said the day’s prospect depended on the community’s commitment and involvement in preparations for it.

“Don’t leave preparations solely to the committee because they cannot do everything alone. Join hands with them.”

The committee chairperson, Mr Taukobong Monageng also pleaded with the few in attendance to support them to ensure that the day is a success.

He urged Bangwato to stand up and honour the late President for what he has done for them.

Mr Monageng said they should emulate how other merafe did their things, citing Domboshaba event as one of the exemples to follow.

The chairperson said if they neglected the celebrations, the day would soon become meaningless and eventually fade away.

Mr Monageng said days such as Sir Seretse Khama Day were historic and without them the future generation would certainly miss out on the country’s history.
