Wellnessfitness of workforce essential

03 Jul 2017

Botswana Meat Commission chief executive officer Dr Akolang Tombale said wellness and fitness of the workforce is vital to any organisation.

Speaking at the Wellness day event held by staff of Lobatse High Court recently, Dr Tombale said the ultimate goal the employers wanted from their employees was to reach maximum productivity levels, and to accomplish this employees needed to be at their best of fitness and health.

He noted that there was an adage that said the body that made money must be kept and employees make the organisation achieve its goals hence they must be looked after properly.

Dr Tombale continued and said employers should therefore encourage physical fitness, spiritual fitness and fitness of the mind, and God had value for men’s life present and future through physical and spiritual fitness.

He said when employers got down to deploy employees to work they tend to forget that bodies were live engines that needed to be serviced and cared for if they were to perform at their best.

Dr Tombale also noted that promoting fitness was one of the most beneficial choices an employer could make to encourage their workers reach their full potential.

He continued and said employee turnover was reduced where employers showed genuine concern for employees, and this could simply be shown by providing free gym, encouraging employee sport leagues and other enjoyable fitness activities.

Dr Tombale said even though wellness day came once in a year, he urged staff to make fitness exercises daily goal particularly the neglected beauty and health product given freely by nature to man.

He added that good and proper nutrition kept body healthy and energised throughout the day and as such increased productivity at work.

He told staff to understand that health was important to them, their families, employers community and the country.

Earlier on, Judge President justice Tafa said wellness day was the most important in the life of any employee, as employees were given opportunity to tend to their wellbeing and learn from experts how to keep healthy body, mind and spirit that would bring optimum results in work.

Judge Tafa encouraged staff to utilise this in gaining optimum benefits from teachings, and exercises, and this was a stepping stone for staff to continue to exercise.

Deputy registrar and master of the High Court, Ms Felicity Segweni said objectives of the day was to revive bodies physically mentally and spiritually, to participate and learn from the health and fitness lessons that were given by facilitators and experts.

Ms Segweni said staff would take advantage of the opportunities availed to them for testing and counselling for various ailments, and to distress or rid brains and minds of stress that accumulated every day in work through games fun and   motivation. ENDS
