Sir Ketumile's body leaves for Kanye

The memorial service to pay tribute to the late second President Sir Ketumile Masire has just ended with benediction by Right Reverend Metlhayotlhe Beleme, Anglican Bishop Botswana.
His body has left the University of Botswana en route to his home village in Kanye where he will be laid to rest in a state funeral tomorrow (June 29).
Earlier, Vice President Mr Mokgweetsi Masisi paid official tribute to the late statesman saying during his many interactions with Sir Ketumile, it became evidently clear that RaGaone was an independent thinker.
He said Sir Ketumile played a pivotal role in the development on the country.
“He leaves behind a solid foundation of Botswana's sustainable economy. We will indeed miss RaGaone's hearty signature laughter. He had a good reputation as a mediator within the region. His principles of peace resolution and respect for human rights will forever remain rooted in our lives as Batswana. As Batswana, we are extremely blessed to have had a leader of his repute. He worked with Sir Seretse to lay a firm foundation for Botswana. We remain eternally grateful for this. Tsamaya sentle Mmina Phiri. May your soul rest in peace,” ,” Mr Masisi said.
Meanwhile, former SADC executive secretary, Dr Thomas Salomao, also said he met Sir Ketumile Masire him after the signing of Frontline States agreement where he worked to bring to fruition.
DeBeers’ Nick Oppenheimer said Sir Ketumile helped shape a partnership between DeBeers and Botswana which is known all over the world. “To the Masire family my thoughts are with you.”
Former president of Mozambique, Mr Armando Guebuza said he was deeply saddened by the loss. He sent condolences on behalf of President Filipe Nyusi.
He said the late Sir Ketumile provided support during trying times when there was political instability between Mozambique, Rhodesia and South Africa.
“President Masire stood out as peace maker in the region. He assisted during Rwanda genocide. He said Masire worked to make Southern Africa a region of progress. Goodbye comrade Masire. Rest in peace,” he said.
Meanwhile, Mo Ibrahim of Mo Ibrahim Foundation said he was grateful to be among those to remember the late Sir Ketumile.
“I do not represent any government but the common. We are grateful for the late Masire’s leadership. One thing I will remember is his humility,” he said. ENDS
