Gaborone Lions Club has been commended for compassion and commiment to uplifting other people in the society.

The Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Mr Olebile Gaborone commended the club at Tlokweng on June 22 after members donated 100 blankets to the elderly, people living with disabilities and under privileged members of the community.

He said the Lions Club has built a reputation of commitment towards community service and voluntary work.

“These blankets are just part of what they have been doing,” said Mr Gaborone, who is also MP for South East North.

He said the club has proved that it is possible for everyone to assist others in need, adding that club members volunteer their time to fundraising activities for the benefit of the community.

“It is love that we recognise in this gesture and not giving out of plenty,” Mr Gaborone added.

He urged beneficiaries to appreciate the fact that there are people who are concerned about the less privileged.

 Mr Gaborone warned residents not to politicise the donations, saying they are not intended to advance people’s political agendas.

The governor of the Lions Club District 412, which comprises of Botswana, Malawi, Mozambique and Zimbabwe, Mr Clement Ndala promised that the club would continue to support the government in development.

“The lions will continue to work with the community and the government in bringing developments,” he said.

Mr Ndala said the responsibility for development lies in every member of the community. He further commended Gaborone Lions Club members for advancing community developments.

Gaborone Lions Club president, Ms Elizabeth Mukamaambo said since their establishment 43 years ago, the club has been engaged in various projects such as donations, building houses for the needy and others.
