Okavango 1 Teachers Committee has donated a bus rank shelter worth P9500 to Sepopa community to reduce congestion encountered during school vacations.
In an interview with BOPA, the committee chairperson, Mr Lucky Zankere said the shelter was constructed through teachers’ contributions.
Mr Zankere, also school head at Shakawe Junior Secondary School and vice chairperson for the Village Extension Team said labour as well as sand, gravel and other material were collected and provided by teachers, whilst the Okavango brigade staff and trainees offered technical support in bricklaying and carpentry..
The vice chairperson noted that the shelter would add value and integrity on the teaching profession.
Mr Zankere said such a contribution also brought them closer to the community they serve, adding that despite challenges they faced as public officers, working with the community was vital as well as being role models to the students they teach.
“Let’s understand that if we didn’t have students we would not be here, they are the most vital resources,” said Mr Zankere.
He also applauded all teachers who devoted their time and energy in making the donation a success, and the regional education offices for assisting with transport.
Mr Zankere urged his colleagues to understand the socio-economic and cultural background of the communities they serve for them to deliver a better service to them. He noted that team work and cooperation could make their mission successful.
Okavango 1 is a sub-regional committee made of three clusters of teachers, involving schools from Etsha 1 to 13, Tsodilo and Shakawe areas.
Meanwhile, Gaboipeelwe Andreck from Gumare reports that Sami Ant Dance Corner has donated shoes to 10 students of Tlhale Primary School in Gumare.
Handing over the donation, the director of Sami Ant Dance Corner, Ms Sesame Tshoswane said this was done under one of the company’s programme called ‘Cover my feet’ aimed at giving back to the community of Ngamiland.
She said after the dance competitions, which were held in Maun recently, they sat down as a company to choose a school they could donate to and came up with Tlhale Primary School.
She said they have decided to donate annually to different schools. She further said the donation was motivated by her love for children, adding that ‘students’ welfare is not only sustained by attending class but by also looking good in class which builds one’s self -esteem.’
Ms Tshoswane noted that the ‘cover my feet’ programme was motivated by the fact that her company is all about dancing and by so doing helps to protect the feet that are used to dance. BOPA
