Marathoners get prizes

Winners of Diacore Marathon Gaborone (DGM) recently received P10 000 prize money each for their victory; courtesy of Stanbic Bank.

A press release from Stanbic Bank states that Rapula Diphoko scooped position one in male category by beating his 2016 record time clocking 01:03:58, while Onneile Dintwe scooped the female category finishing the race in 01:20:51.

It states that the winners also received sporting merchandise from the bank.

It says Stanbic Bank and DGM sponsorship partnership which is in its second year, will hand over the marathon to The African Women Leadership Academy, a non-profit making organisation that seeks to empower young women, the girl and boy child through networking, mentoring and leadership skills training.

According to the release, Stanbic Bank head of Corporate and Investment Banking, Sheperd Aisam said they believe in promoting sporting excellence and instilling a culture of supporting home-grown talent and giving back to the community.

Aisam further said as a corporate citizen it is their responsibility to seek ways in which the bank can improve other people’s lives.

The release also says DGM head of PR and Marketing, Thabo Makgato said this year’s marathon improved as the region’s favoured half-marathon event with a record turnout from local, regional and international athletes and amateurs intent doing their very best.

Makgato further said seeing Botswana born athletes running highly competitive times and using this event as a stepping stone to qualify for other major international events is the realisation of everything that aspired conception of the DGM.

Thabo expressed happiness, noting that DGM had greater pride that has availed avenues for giving back to the community.

For her part, Dintwe said she is humbled by Stanbic Bank’s price, as it encourages her to continue training to better her performance yearly.

She said such platforms as sponsorship from Stanbic Bank are springboard to other regional and international races. BOPA
