Organisations walk for eco-literacy

06 Jun 2017

The Chobe Regional Education Office, Ducere Foundation and Elephants Without Borders have teamed up for a 240 kilometre Eco-Literacy Walk themed: Empowering future leaders today for a healthier world tomorrow.

The walk is aimed at promoting positive environmental practices throughout the communities of Chobe.

Speaking at a briefing at Parakarungu kgotla, Mr Thato Tsheko of Ducere Foundation stated that the walk was aimed at raising funds for the regional debate competition which would take place this month.

The debate will involve 12 schools, of which 10 are primary schools and two junior secondary schools.

Mr Tsheko said the walk was also aimed at empowering both the young and the old from the community with environmental literacy, and that the five-day walk would be part of an exercise aimed at promoting fitness among students and community members.

“The goal is for the message to be displayed not only in the Chobe region, but across the country,” he added.

Ms Kelly Landen of Elephants Without Borders noted that because the Chobe region was known for its large number of wildlife, they have the support of Botswana Police Services and Department of Wildlife and National Parks (DWNP) members for safety reasons during their walk.

She further said as they celebrate World Environmental Day, they found it important to engage young leaders to empower them with environmental literacy and support them on environmental conservation.

The walk, which started at Parakarungu kgotla, will conclude at Pandamatenga on 9 June. ENDS
