Botswana Parliament Caucus on Women strongly condemns violation of women and girls.

Speaking at a press conference in Gaborone on Monday, chairperson of the caucus, Ms Botlogile Tshireletso said sexism, sexual abuse and gender based violence remained an issue of concern in Botswana.

Ms Tshireletso, also the Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural Development said the caucus joint the civil society and public at large in strongly condemning the barbaric act performed by some men on a young woman at the Gaborone Bus Rank.

On May 22, a group of hooligans tripped naked a young woman with the intent to embarrass her.

She said that was a disturbing and appalling act that occurred in full view of members of the public who did nothing to aid the young woman.

“We are so disappointed that some onlookers were cheering instead of doing anything to help the young woman,” she said.

Ms Tshireletso, also Mahalapye East legislator, called out to women to support their own and appealed to government to ensure that the perpetrators were brought to book.

She said in line with the United Nation’s call to fund efforts to fight gender based violence, government should commit funds from the national budget towards supporting victims of gender based violence and to fund programmes directed towards the effort.

She pointed out that the Parliamentary caucus was open to working with women and the civil society to initiate legislation aimed at protecting women or strengthening existing laws.

To a young woman, Ms Tshireletso encouraged them to stand strong and tall, adding that she was beautiful, wonderfully and fearfully made and that she should never allow anyone to tell and treat her otherwise.

Specially elected MP, Ms Bogolo Kenewendo stated that the way one dressed or spoke did not invite violation.

Ms Kenewendo said all should be allowed the freedom to dress anyhow they wished.

She assured the young woman, that she  would receive counselling.

Ms Kenewendo asked everybody to protection women and children and help build a strong nation. ENDS
