MP takes community service to MaterSpei
29 May 2017
In an effort to take his constituency office to the public, the Member of Parliament for Francistown East, Mr Buti Billy on May 27 engaged in community service work at Mater Spei College.
Together with his constituency office staff, sponsors and members of the community, they painted and cleaned a foundation housing three students statue located in front of the school’s administration block.
Apex and Buy N’ Build Hardware stores had donated paints, brushes and overalls for the May 27 initiative.
In an interview, the MP revealed that the aim of their community outreach was to take their office to the public and to also appreciate his community for making him the leader that he was today.
He said every month they assist the less privileged members of society through their social responsibility initiatives such as buying uniforms for needy students.
“When a parent comes to my office decrying for help in buying their child a school uniform, I become compelled to assist because I believe in the power of education. We normally send that parent to get a quotation for the kind of uniform their child requires and then purchase it for them through the assistance of many of our partnering companies who are always responsive to our requests,” he said.
Through a registered foundation under his constituency called Francistown East Community Development Trust, MP Billy stated that they had drawn a plan to assist members of the community to build water borne toilets in light of council’s request to phase out pit latrines.
Another initiative, he added, was partnering with BONA Life Insurance Company to offer community members dignified funerals at lower monthly premiums.
The senior research and administration officer at the Francistown East constituency office, Mr Sam Masunga explained that their office saw it fit to give to Mater Spei College because the school did well in the past BGCSE examinations and produced the best overall 2015/16 BGCSE student in the country.
“People live under the impression that because MaterSpei is a mission school run by the Roman Catholic Church, it has money. But our numerous interactions with the school management show that it is in dire need of community support in anyway possible.
The fact that the school is doing well academically should be motivation enough for the Francistown community to come on board and keep the school motivated and producing good results,” Mr Masunga said.
He said school facilities needed refurbishment as the tennis, volleyball and netball courts were in a dilapidated state. ENDS
