Khama uplifts souls at SOS childrens village

23 Jun 2013

President Lt Gen. Seretse Khama Ian Khama and five cabinet ministers were on June 21 engaged in a community service day at Serowe SOS Children’s village.

They took part in the construction of see-saws and planting of trees at the children's village.

President Khama also donated a football kit.

Earlier on when welcoming the President and his cabinet, board chairman of SOS Botswana, retired Major General Bakwena Oitsile said SOS has three villages in Tlokweng, Francistown and Serowe.

The three villages, he said, consist of 450 children who reside within the premises, and that they add up to 2 400 inclusive of those coming from other outside villages.

"The intention is to have the fourth village in Maun should funds permit."

However, he said feeding the children was their main challenge, but hastened to say the situation was not bad in Serowe since residents come forth with pledges.

"Serowe SOS was the only one which was built through voluntary work thus continues to receive help from locals, " he said.

Minister of Lands and Housing Mr Lebonaamang Mokalake said the gesture was part of the President’s initiative of community service.

Mr Mokalake said proposed visit to SOS Serowe was meant to instill the spirit of extending a helping hand to needy persons in the society.

Various government departments, he noted, have already followed suit and make the future bright for those in need. ENDS
