Minister of Transport and Communications, Mr Kitso Mokaila says the construction of Masunga/ Tshesebe road will provide convenience and easy access to services within the North East District upon its completion in 2019.
Addressing a kgotla meeting in Masunga on the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD)on Friday, Mr Mokaila said the new road would motivate business people to bring their businesses to Masunga.
Mr Mokaila said developments and events such as the WTISD, were meant to unite the community, hence; he urged the people to always attend kgotla meetings and air their views.
Furthermore, Minister Mokaila said transport had come a long way and evolved with time in order to make life easy.
He indicated that life today differed from the life lived by the forefathers, which he said should never be forgotten when new developments keep coming.
Mr Mokaila said government realised the importance of telecommunications, hence Botswana purchased undersea cables to connect with the rest of the world.
The minister also encouraged the youth to spearhead projects that were aimed at the development of Botswana.
“As we are in Masunga today, we want things to change so that you are able to access everything while in your own locality for your convenience,” he said.
He said bringing services to Masunga meant people would not be travelling far distances.
Responding to questions from residents on what measures were in place to reprimand people who abused the Internet by insulting others, he said government continued to raise awareness on the use of Internet.
However, he noted that the young generations disregarded the advice.
He stated that they were working on laws, which would ensure stringent measures were put in place to punish all perpetrators who abused Internet.
Regarding poor network coverage in some areas in the district, he said it was a challenge in that the infranstructure was set up by private companies at their own discretion where they want to take their service to make profit.
Also, Mr Mokaila pointed out the issue of taxis was a nationwide challenge, as some people had chosen not to use taxis, thus making the business not lucrative.
However, he said during the last Transport Pitso, it was suggested that meter taxis should be introduced so as to solve problems surrounding the business.
For his part, Kgosi Maruje III of Masunga thanked the Ministry of Transport and Communications and its stakeholders for having chosen to commemorate the WTISD in Masunga.
