Council beats odds to keep clean environment
17 May 2017
Kanye sub-district councillors have been reminded of the council’s environmental health mandate of providing waste collection services to the community.
The sub council chairperson Mr Tlhomamo Dibeela told the council meeting on May 16 that the service was being provided through community based refuse collection in the sub district.
He said the division experienced breakdown of refuse compactors during the last council while two compactors were in the workshop.
Despite the challenges encountered the environmental health department would continue using the available resources to provide the service.
Efforts are being made to keep Kanye clean, as the division is working together with other stakeholders.
He said a shade net had been installed at the landfill in order to control waste from being blown away by wind and scatter around the landfill.
He added that a total of 150 dustbins were purchased and would be distributed as replacement of old ones to council employees.
He said the dustbins would be installed along main roads and primary schools without refuse receptacles.
Concerning small business persons who constructed illegal structures within the road reserves, and operating without hawkers and street vending licenses, he said a consultative workshop was organised to strategise on how there could be trade and at the same time keeping a clean environment. ENDS
