Orphans vulnerable children acquire sponsorships

16 May 2017

The Kanye Administrative Authority (KAA) has been assisting orphans and vulnerable children to acquire sponsorship for tertiary education through a special dispensation, says KAA council chairperson, Mr Tlhomamo Dibeela.

Mr Dibeela said this during the KAA sub council session on May 15.

He noted that the authority conducted career fairs where different tertiary institution were invited to present on the courses they offered.

“Through this programme, 93 orphans and vulnerable children were able to gain entrance in tertiary schools, and this gives us hope that upon completion these young persons will be able to better their lives and that of their families,” he said.

Mr Dibeela said since the 2014/15 financial year, 30 houses were constructed through the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development funding.

This, he added, has had a positive impact on the dignity and welfare of their clientele.

This financial year, he said, 19 more additional houses were going to be built throughout the sub-district.

He noted that the waiting list stood at 87 families who were in need of shelter.

He urged councillors and other stakeholders to ensure the realisation of the government agenda such as eradication of poverty.

On disability, he said since the disability cash allowance in August 2015, 339 people with disability were assessed.

He said out of the number, 259 people with severe and profound disability were recommended for allowance, and that 231 have started accessing the cash allowance.

Mr Dibeela noted that the allowance gave people with disability a dignified life as well as cushioning their caregivers from the financial burden of taking care of them.

He further noted that assessments were ongoing since new cases continued to emerge and were attended to.

The KAA chairperson said there were 26 VDCs from which two being Diabo and Dipotsana were transfer inns and would resume duty in June 2017.

He said the initial 23 VDCs had been audited and that the results showed that most VDCs were doing well in terms of managing community funds.

He said to improve the running of VDCs, the sub-district embarked on intensive trainings for the 23 VDCs in May 2015.

He advised the committees to evict any tenant who stayed in their houses for more than three months without paying to avoid accumulation of arrears, adding that it was advisable to use legal machineries or court bailiffs in kgotla’s to speed up the recovery of debts. ENDS
