Former cabinet minister and diplomat, Ms Tebelelo Seretse has challenged parents to play a role towards education of their children.
Ms Seretse was giving a key note address at the 3rd excellence awards organised under the Ministry of Basic Education by the Central regional office recently.
“Education gives mental, financial and intellectual independence that no one can take away from you. Unlike property, which can be inherited, education can never be inherited,” she said.
Ms Seretse also encouraged parents to equipt and encourage their children to take advantage of the modern technologies available, such as the Internet which they could use for research.
She further acknowledged the awardees for their excelling and outstanding performance which they have displayed towards their studies.
“It is vital for you to be recognised for your good performance as you are also setting example for those behind you,” she said.
She however condemned students who assaulted their teachers, saying such students were a disgrace, a threat and a hindrance towards the improvement of education.
“In the past teachers were role models and inspiration. Students respected and will never lay a hand on a teacher, and it was a privilege and an encouragement to be close to a teacher. This are the ideals which we need to instill in our children,” she said.
She thanked teachers for their continued efforts in moulding the students amid the challenges that they were faced with.
“In recognition of your hardwork, we do appreciate you, we appreciate the effort, hard work that you put in moulding the students. We are certain that you shall continue all the hardwork in the midst of all this challenges, which shall one day come to pass’, she said
With the event held under the theme, ‘Partnerships with stakeholders-Unleashing potential in academic excellence, Ms Seretse emphasised that with the support and assistance from the business sector, politicians and other sectors there was high potential that the education sector may prosper.
“We need to seek partnership from other sectors for the success of education, towards the assistance of learning aids as they are a critical to academic performance,” she said. ENDS
