Drivers commit to slow down
14 May 2017
Multitudes of drivers at the Mogoditshane/Thamaga and Molepolole Administration Authority/Lentsweletau Sub-Districts have committed to driving safely to save lives.
The drivers made such a commitment during the United Nations Global Road Safety Week in Molepolole which ran from May 8-14.
The Molepolole traffic safety officer Ms Tendai Lisenda said the week was observed under the theme: “Save Lives #Slowdown.”
She said Botswana as a member of the United Nations was participating in the operation which had combined educating drivers about the dangers of speed and law enforcement as they had mounted speed traps to nab those that did not observe speed limits.
She indicated that apart from education and enforcement, the Kweneng District has decided to engage drivers by requiring them to commit themselves and also write messages to other drivers.
Ms Lisenda said in many occasions the Department of Road Transport and Safety personnel were the ones that disseminated road safety messages to drivers but this time they used drivers to educate fellow drivers.
She said the messages pledged by drivers would be published in an open public space where everyone could have access to them.
Ms Lisenda commended most of the drivers for their cooperative and positive response towards the event , saying most of them were excited to participate and owned the campaign.
She said that other stakeholders such as the Botswana Police Service, Botswana Defence Force, the Department of Wildlife and National Parks, Fire department and other government departments participated in the campaign to make it a success. Despite other drivers being charged for over speeding, some of them appreciated the campaign as they indicated that it was a lesson learnt.
One of the drivers who took part in the launch, Mr Obed Nkgau pleaded with drivers and other road user to always leave well on time to avoid over speeding. ENDS
