Boxers brace for Africa champs
12 May 2017
SSKB Boxing club will tomorrow (May 13) host about 14 clubs for the 4th edition of the inter-club tournament which will have some boxers picked for the national team assignment in Congo Brazzaville end of this month.
Botswana will send a strong team of boxers to the central African country for the African Confederation Boxing championship which starts on May 27 to June 4.
In an interview, Botswana Boxing Associations (BoBA) spokesperson, Kenny Maragana highlighted that though the inter-club tournament is a qualifier for the closely contested end of year National championship they might use tomorrow’s tournament to make final preparations for the national team.
Botswana has a long break from regional competitions after missing out on the Zone IV championships hosted in Mozambique last month, owing to financial constraints.
Maragana said with budget allowing, they would send a considerable number to the Africa tournament.
Meanwhile, fists are expected to fly thick and fast in tomorrow’s tournament in Mogoditshane. Undoubtedly the toast of the day might be a welter weight tie between sworn enemies; Mmusi Tswiige and Lentswe Zwinila.
Former Commonwealth medalist, Zwinila comes into the fight a wounded buffalo after succumbing to Tswiige’s left hooks in their last bout. On the other hand, Tswiige was not part of the national team in Angola where Zwinila was eventually crowned the finest boxer in his bout last year and would like to prove his mettle.
Another interesting tie is in the light weight division where the UB/Tsholofelo boxer Kefentse Molalapata will cross paths with DTCB’s Kabelo Bagwasi.
The two were voted the best bout in their last meeting in the national championship last year and a rematch is in the offing.
All eyes will also be on the likes of Zibani Chikanda, Mohammed Otukile, Kutlwano Ogaketse; while the ladies category will present the likes of Beauty Phori and Joyce Moilwa amongst others. ENDS
