GBV rife in Lobatse

The rising number of Gender Based Violence (GBV)cases in Lobatse is a concern, says Woodhall Superintendent Tebogo Madisa.
In an interview recently, Superintendent Madisa said they recorded 75 cases from January to March last year compared to 109 cases this year.
Superintendent Madisa explained that most of the assaults usually occurred after a night of drinking. “Some men use alcohol to boost their confidence. Instead of voicing their concerns to their partners, they prefer to keep quiet and go drinking and thereafter assault their partners”
He also raised concern about women who go out empty handed to entertainment centres making them vulnerable.
To address the violence, he called on partners who were in relationships to solve their issues amicably, or to engage a third party or family relatives whom they trust.
Regarding stock theft, Superintendent Madisa stated that although stock theft was not rife in his policing area, they recorded six cases compared to one last year in the same period.
He further revealed that due to their commitment, they were able to make three interventions. “From January to March this year, we were able to arrest thieves travelling from Maisane who transited via Magotlwane and Mogobane heading to Gaborone where there is a lucrative market for beef,” he explained.
He also advised cattle owners to visit their cattleposts frequently and not to rely on their herdsmen to do everything.
He, however, applauded area leadership, cluster policing, and neighbours for their commitment and cooperation towards fighting crime in their area. ENDS
