Rent a chair solution to startups

03 May 2017

Rent a chair has increasingly become a solution to many youth who have ventured into salon businesses at Mogoditshane and surrounding places.

Many young people who are interested in the business are often faced with the challenge of accommodation and lack of funds to start their salon business. Like many youth who are faced with unemployment,

Ms Phemo Khutsafalo, who is gifted with hair crafting skills, took the opportunity to be self-employed and independent through renting a chair in one of the salons in Mogoditshane.

“I realised that I was gifted in hairdressing at a tender age and started plaiting for money after completing my studies. Now that I have built a client base, I saw the need to sort of formalise my business,” she stated.

Renting a chair is advantageous because one gets to use utilities in the salon hence attract customers as compared to using open spaces.

Moreover, renting a chair is more beneficial because you always have colleagues who can assist with small jobs like hair washing while you attend to another client.

Even though hairdressers who use open spaces do not get to share a percentage of their profit with the salon owner, Ms Phemo sees it as an entrepreneurship basic for someone who is serious about growing their business.

Additionally, she reckons that weighing the options, advantages of the business not being affected during days with bad weather conditions are a positive.

Ms Queen Mosethe, a regular at the salon highlighted that she enjoyed the comfort of the salon and the security that comes with it.

Rent a chair comes in different forms: One may pay per day about seven up to 10 pula per client seating or pay a lump sum of about P1 200-P1 500 per month. ENDS
