American Peace Corps volunteers hosted Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) camp for some Form 5 students over the weekend at Shashe River Senior School.
In an interview, one of the volunteers Ms Brenna Kuhn said the purpose of the camp was to make students appreciate science and pursue science careers in future.
Ms Kuhn said they also wanted to give students, who did not like science an opportunity to be able to enjoy and be engaged in science.
Ms Marriam Khuruta a Biology teacher and a coordinator of Maths and Science club, said she was happy with the initiative because it gave students a chance to experience science hands on rather than the theory that theywere used to.
She further said the students gets to experience their creativity as some of the activities performed in the camp made them to think outside the box.
One of the students, Trust Moyo said he was happy to be part of the camp because he learnt a lot of things that challenged them and experience applying practical science in fun way since they are used to theory science.
Ms Chawapiwa Mahlaya, grants coordinator of Peace Corps stated that they were delighted to have had hosted such a programme for students because youth were a priority population that they were working with in Botswana.
“Through these camps, young people in science are able to get hands on experience,” she said. ENDS
