Three way battle for playoffs
27 Apr 2017
Three teams will be fighting for a place in the Premier League promotion playoffs in the last matches of the 2016/17 Debswana First Division South league on Saturday, April 29.
Uniao Flamingo Santos, in second position with 38 points, have already put one foot in the playoffs, but are feeling pressure from the resurgent Notwane and Black Peril.
The two teams are two points behind Santos and will be fighting to dislodge the Gabane team from the playoffs.
Notwane, who have won their last four matches to rise to third place will be away to relegation threatened Modipane United, while fourth placed Black Peril will lay in wait for Letlapeng in Tlokweng.
Santos on the other hand will have a tough assignment against Prisons XI to negotiate in Gabane.
Kgosietsile Mampori’s men must stop their recent wobbly run and beat the Warders to book their berth in the playoffs.
They were in good frame to secure automatic promotion few weeks ago, but their flourishing form deserted them after losing a crucial top of the table clash against Sharps Shooting Stars 1-0.
Their grip on the playoffs was further loosened, after they were held to a goalless draw by struggling Mochudi Rovers last weekend.
Santos manager, Boniface Mokgosi is however still confident that they will be in the playoffs.
Mokgosi said in an interview yesterday that Santos was ready for the crunch encounter which will be played in Gabane.
“The coaches and management have talked to players at training in order to motivate them. We have told them to focus on the Prisons match and forget about what will be happening elsewhere. The only hurdle we have in front of us is Prisons XI,” Mokgosi said.
The manager said their only problem was that key midfielders, Tshepo Mbulawa and Goitsemodimo Zoko would miss the match through suspension and injury respectively.
Notwane manager Julius Baitumetse said his team was highly charged for the match, explaining that they were taking a full strength squad to Modipane.
“We are well prepared for the match against Modipane United. Out interim coaches have managed to transform the team in a short period of time after they were appointed. It is unfortunate that it has happened late in the season, but we still believe that we will be in the playoffs. We are sure about three points against Modipane,” Baitumetse said in an interview.
In other games, Skoon Boys will host champions Sharps Shooting Stars in Charleshill, Lesirane City host Mogoditshane Fighters while Matebejane will welcome Mochudi Rovers. ENDS
