BHC donates to Gweta flood victims

27 Apr 2017

Botswana Housing Corporation (BHC) has donated goods worth P85 000 to Gweta residents who were affected by the recent floods.
Handing over the goods to the Member of Parliament for Nata-Gweta Mr Polson Majaga on Wednesday, BHC chief executive officer, Mr Reginald Motswaiso said they found it fit to help each other with the little they have.
“As a united nation, we go together and end together,” he said.
Mr Motswaiso said the drawback of lives of Gweta residents was not only for them but for the nation as a whole.

The goods included two 10 000 litres tanks, groceries, toiletries, protective clothing (boots, dust coats, gloves), snake repel and mosquito nets.
“The government alone cannot manage to help all the floods affected villages” adding that in Setswana they say, “kgetsi ya tsie e kgonwa ke go tshwaraganelwa” hence they extended a helping hand.
Mr Motswaiso said they also helped Etsha 6 and also have programmes that assisted children in clinics and hospitals and during Christmas.
“Batswana should be a helping nation, they should support those that are affected and not to think that it is a disgrace,” he said.

He said floods were not an ignominy, but was a test to Gweta residents to learn from the incident and prepare well in time for such occurrences in future.
Mr Motswaiso also encouraged residents to utilise the BHC programmes to build their homes.
Kgosi Keletlhobogile Baatholeng of Gweta expressed happiness that BHC supported residents.
He said even though BHC was a profit making organisation, it has found it suitable to give back to residents of Gweta despite that they have no premises in the village.
“Endowment is a great work to accept with open hands,” he said.

Mr Majaga said residents should learn self-containment than starting to count on the help they received and the ones they did not.
He said they should accept the little given to sustain them and appreciate the support instead of politicising assistance.
Councillor Moses Bobeng of Gweta said gifts such as food should not bring hatred or separate residents.
He said residents should thank BHC's hard work and utilise the goods aptly. ENDS
