Sowa Junior Secondary School girls’ team has retained the Morongwa chess tournament tittle.
The junior teams chess finals were held at Marulamantsi JSS in Gaborone over the weekend. The Sowa girls proved a hard nut to crack against other schools that had made it to the finals. Nkange JSS emerged second while Ntebogang JSS from Kanye finished third.
In the boys’ category, Kgalemang JSS from Serowe claimed the first spot while Ditsweletse JSS from Letlhakane and Tsodilo JSS from Maun finished second and third respectively. Gold medallists were awarded floating trophies while positions two and three received silver and bronze medals respectively.
Meanwhile, Metsimasweu JSS from Serowe, who had to defend their title after claiming it last, did not make it to the finals despite having qualified.
In an interview, the Botswana Chess Federation (BCF) tournament director, Vincent Masole said Metsimasweu school did not communicate their problem, which could have led to their absence in the finals.
At the end of the tournament, Botswana National Sports Council (BNCS) chairperson, Solly Reikeletseng encouraged Batswana, especially young people, to take sport seriously and make a living out of it. ENDS
