BDF celebrates 40 years
23 Apr 2017
President Lt Gen. Dr Seretse Khama Ian Khama was among hundreds of Batswana who gathered at the National Stadium to commemorate Botswana Defence Force (BDF)’s 40 years of existence.
The Ruby Jubilee celebrations come shortly after the nation assembled at the same venue to mark 50 years of independence. The jovial mood and celebratory aura had not yet settled as multitude of Batswana crammed to full capacity to celebrate with men and women in uniform.
The weekend’s celebration of 40 years of existence marked an important milestone in the history of the youthful military organization that has been described as a successful transformation into a professional entity.
Activities of the day began with President Khama, who is also Commander-in-Chief taking a lap of honour accompanied by a 26-horse guard.
The front and rear horses bore the national and BDF flags in ceremonial honour.
The colorful spectacle was made even more marvelous by the fly past salute of two military helicopters much to the excitement of members of the public who crammed into the north and southern stands respectively.
As is customary in military fashion, the main parade was led by the band that belted out beautiful melodies such as the traditional British grenadiers, a regimental slow marching song that dates back to the 17th century.
There was also a display of a mock battle, a re-enactment of government forces clashing with rebel soldiers in a frontline town-a true reflection of how successful the BDF has participated in peacekeeping mission across the African continent.
Some of the activities that unfolded during the day were synchronised drill, dog display, horse display, obstacle assault course, para troopers drop and the military motorcade.
