Masunga hosts World Telecommunication Information Society day
19 Apr 2017
The Ministry of Transport and Communications and key stakeholders will commemorate World Telecommunication and Information Society Day in Masunga next month.
A press release from the Ministry of Transport and Communications says the day will be commemorated under the theme: Big data, for big impact. It says the theme focuses on the power of big data for development and aims to explore how to turn imperfect, complex, unstructured data into actionable information in a development context.
The release further says the insight brought on by advanced analysis can complement the evidence based nature of decision making that can be leveraged at national, regional and international levels to drive success towards attaining all 17 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals for 2030.
It says this is in line with the International Telecommunication Union work highlighting the technological developments that have facilitated the emergence of big data, developing standards related to big data and identifying sources and uses of big data, including use of big data technologies for developing and monitoring improvements in information societies.
The press release further highlighted that the event helps to raise awareness of the possibilities that the internet and other information and communication technologies can bring to societies and economies as well as to bridge the digital divide.
The World Telecommunication and Information Society Day is commemorated annually on the 17th May, with a specific theme adopted from the ITU for that particular year. BOPA
