The Ministry of Basic Education permanent secretary, Ms Grace Muzila has urged students to take their education seriously and make the nation proud.
Speaking at an appreciation ceremony held at Mater Spei College recently, she said one of the factors that would help raise the country’s economy was through excellent academic performance of students.
She said when students excel, the institution would also be recognised hence, the ministry achieves its goal and mandate of promoting quality education.
She added that they were proud of hardworking students.
She further urged them to introspect while there was still time, saying they should make use of the management and the support staff to help them turn their dreams into reality.
Ms Muzila said they were looking at students to make the country proud, their parents, society and make an unforgettable legacy to encourage the coming generation that excellence exists and could be achieved.
BONA Life chief executive officer, Ms Reginah Vaka upon presenting a cheque of P10 000 to Susan Charlie who got an overall of nine subjects A* encouraged students to study hard and use their talents to the best of their abilities.
She said they should understand that God made people with different talents to achieve different goals in life therefore, they should compete among themselves to be the best in everything they do.
Susan, who was the overall best student in the BGCSE examinations, expressed her gratitude to those who supported her, saying she was proud to have achieved the best results.
She said she received messages from abroad to congratulate her on her remarkable performance and that makes her even more proud that she has branded herself and her country worldwide.
She urged students to stop undermining themselves and comparing themselves with others, saying it lowers their self esteem towards their education which results in them eventually losing hope.
She encouraged them to never lose hope even when it was tough, challenging and impossible to breakthrough.
“I did it because as a student my formula was clear and simple. I prioritised my studies and made sure I do not avoid the challenging and difficult subjects, I made sure I understand every topic I was taught and I was never lazy to ask for help,” she added.
She encouraged them to never give into temptations that could derail them from achieving better results, saying she was an example of not giving up.
Furthermore, she noted that her results were achievable and urged them to make their country proud and have a brighter future for themselves.
However, Mater Spei school head, Mr Jabulani Munyere urged students to protect themselves and refrain from being engaged in activities that exposed them to danger, citing an example of going to clubs during the school holidays.
He said such behavior does not suit them as they were tomorrow’s leaders and were still building their future.
Mr Munyere encouraged them to use the holidays as a time to reflect and see how they could improve their academic performance.
He further said the school had one drop out due to pregnancy, urging them to refrain from indulging in sexual activities while they were still students and focus on getting better results. ENDS
