Energy company, Total Botswana in conjunction with Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) Fund and the Cycle for Life cycling club will on April 23 present the Cycle Your City tour.

 

The annual event, which is on its third year, will take riders from Total Game City past Total Gaborone West, Dikgosi Monument, Total Broadhurst, Total Mmashia, making a last stop at Total Village then back to Game City.

 

Officially launching the cycling tour on April 7, Gaborone mayor, Kagiso Thutlwe said the initiative was an effort to bring together motorists and cyclists as well as to encourage people to take up healthy living as a priority.  

 

He said as an avid cyclist, he was ready to share the road with other road users, something which was lacking in some individuals. 

 

Thutlwe said he would appeal to relevant authorities to consider punishing those who were deliberately reckless on the road.

 

For his part, Total Botswana managing director, Ntsuku Lekalakala said as the host they were particularly impressed by the numbers turning up for the cycling tour. 

 

He applauded MVA fund for its support, saying government was also mandated with ensuring safety in roads.

 

Keletso Madidimalo gave a testimony following a freak car accident while riding. 

 

He reiterated the mayors’ concern about lack of respect amongst road users. 

 

He said the animosity between cyclists and motorists was alarming.

 

The theme for this year’s initiative is: Share the Road with Cyclists. 

A stipulated 15kilometres, 35km and 62km is placed on the day’s events and riders from 10 years of age are set to cycle the city. ENDS
