MP laments lack of parental support
17 Jun 2013
Some parents are reluctant to encourage children’s behavioural change, Mahalapye West MP has said.
Speaking at Leetile Memorial School’s 40-year anniversary celebration, Mr Bernard Bolele said some parents did not attend Parents Teachers Association (PTA) general meetings. He indicated that parental support was lacking in the education system hence a disturbing tendency as the nation desired an educated and informed nation by 2016.
MP Bolele said the current global and internal challenges had made it imperative for Botswana to transform its educational system in order to be competitive in the global market place and produce graduates who could play crucial roles in the development of the nation.
He said Botswana’s education system was intended to produce human resources for every sector of the economy and to make citizens literate and skilled to contribute to the nation’s global growth. Thus, he said, schools such as Leetile Memorial had to be respected because they were at the centre of Mahalapye transformational process and at heart of the country’s current education system.
He therefore expressed hope that the school would pursue its objective of producing well-educated and disciplined citizens who would play prominent roles in the socio-economic, cultural and political development of the nation.
He said founders, dedicated teachers and head teachers who in diverse ways had committed themselves to nurturing and shaping the young minds entrusted to them so as to make them useful citizens should also be saluted.
Again, he said he was hopeful that such occasions offered school leaders opportunity to take stock of activities within the school to determine attainment of the school’s vision, mission and core values. ENDS
