No funds to decongest bus rank

30 Mar 2017

The Central District Council has completed the design for Mahalapye bus rank together with the village drainage master plan during the financial year 2008/2009. Responding to a question in parliament on Wednesday, Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural Development Mr Frans Van der Westhuizen said the project was not implemented due to the economic downturn of 2009. He further said the project was amongst those included in the district Development Plan 8/NDP 11 proposals but was not approved due to budgetary constraints. Mr Van der Westhuizen noted that there were no plans to construct market stalls and toilets at the existing bus rank at the moment due to limited space. He also said a plot had been allocated for the construction of bus terminal where toilets would be a component of the bus terminal but there were no plans for construction of the bus terminal due to budgetary constraints and the project would be considered during mid-term review of NDP 11. Member of Parliament for Mahalapye East, Mr Joseph Molefe wanted to know if the minister was aware that the bus rank at Mahalapye was congested and  prone to flooding with no storm water drainage and if so when a proper bus rank would be constructed. He also wanted to know when the market stall for hawkers will be constructed. ENDS
