Ministry of Health and Wellness has a total of 1 039 vacant posts across all departments. Speaking in Parliament on March 29, Minister of Health and Wellness, Ms Dorcas Makgato said out of a total establishment of 19 969, the vacancies at corporate services were 126, clinical services 823, health policy development, monitoring and evaluation (16) public health (44) HIV/AIDS prevention and care (27) and health inspectorate (3). The minister also said there were 83 temporary employees as at March. Ms Makgato said challenges that caused delay in filling these vacant posts included inability to attract and retain skilled and specialist staff, unavailability of skills in the labour market, refusal or slow uptake by local health care workers to go to rural areas. The Specially Elected MP, Mr Mephato Reatile had asked Minister Makgato to state the total number of vacant posts at the ministry, the total number of temporary employees engaged to acquire experience and also the challenges that caused delay in filling these posts.
