28 Mar 2017

Assistant Minister for Presidential Affairs, Governance and Public Administration, Mr Thato Kwerepe, says he is aware of the wishes of people of Selebi-Phikwe West to meet President Lt Gen. Dr Seretse Khama Ian Khama regarding liquidation of the BCL mine and the future of the town.
Mr Kwerepe was responding to a question in Parliament from Selebi Phikwe West MP, Mr Dithapelo Keorapetse recently.
“Due to the President’s tight schedule, President Khama assigned Vice President, Mr Mokgweetsi Masisi, who led a team of cabinet ministers to consult BCL mine employees and the community of Selebi-Phikwe,” he said.
He further said President Khama was satisfied with the engagement of the Selebi Phikwe community by the team, which subsequently produced the Revitalisation Plan of Selebi-Phikwe town, which was now being implemented.
He said there was a standing item on the Agenda of Cabinet on the BCL and revitalisation of Selebi-Phikwe, and government was regularly updated on such matters.
On the official visit to Selebi Phikwe, he said President Khama constantly undertook consultations across the country on various issues.
“Therefore, as and when that opportunity arises, residents of Selebi Phikwe would be informed,” he added.
Mr Keorapetse had asked the minister if he was aware of the wishes of the people of Selebi-Phikwe West to meet President Khama as soon as possible, at a kgotla meeting regarding liquidation of the BCL mine and the future of the town.
The MP also wanted to know whether President Khama had such intentions and how soon he would be able to visit Selebi Phikwe on the issue. ENDS
