27 Mar 2017
Women’s Day is celebrated globally, during the month of March every year in honour of their remarkable contribution to the society. The day also commemorates the inspiring role of women around the world to secure women’s rights and build more equitable societies.
Lobatse town also celebrated the day and remembered the voices of many women that go unheard and who continue to be dominated from securing their rights and realising their full potential.
Gender officer Ms Gorata Ntshwabi said the society should understand that men and women differed in terms of needs. Speaking during the International Women’s Day celebration on Friday, under the theme Be bold for change, Ms Ntshwabi said virtuous women should be celebrated for their good works, endeavours and struggles.
She however appealed to women that they should not misinterpret the equality issue by trying to topple men as heads of families, but rather respect men and work on making the change they wanted to see in the society through their skills, potentials and talents. Ms Ntshwabi urged women to make use of government programmes and venture into businesses, adding that society should also support the gender equality cause by being gender sensitive.
Also present in the meeting was the International Working Group on Women and Sport resource mobilisation manager, under the programme HeforShe, Ms Changu Siwawa who stated that it was vital for women to partake in sport for health and economic reasons.
She said HeforShe programme helped fights hindrances to women participating in sport and also encouraged men to close equality gap in sport.
Ms Siwawa said women participating in sport did not only benefit in fitness area but acquired leadership and team building spirit. ENDS
