Karate picks senior team for championship

The Botswana Karate Association (BOKA) has finalised its selection of senior national team that will take part in regional and continental championships.
Senior karatekas rounded their preparations for the national team slots in three legged point system matches on Saturday at the association’s training hall.
Prior to the final match BOKA hosted the north and south qualifiers where medalists from these two tournaments converged to battle for national honours.
The team which is yet to be called into camp will first travel to Yaoundé, Cameroon, for the 16th edition of the Africa Karate Union Senior Championships slated for 14 May.
Immediately after the biennial continental championships the team will travel to Mozambique for the Africa Union Sport Council Region 5 tournament.
The day long tournament on Saturday lived to its expectations producing a tight affair at the end.
Africa Youth Games champion Thabang Setshego clinched the male under 60 individual kumite closely followed by Batlaareng Shabane.
Setshego’s road to victory had not been an easy one after being nagged by injuries during the entire season.
Lemogang Keolopile defended his U67kg title beating the likes of Teto Wakwena and Tirafalo Tsimamma.
Oratile Caiphus continued his dominance in the U-75kg with Quinton Mosupiemang closely following on the second spot.
Mpho Bosenakitso beat Kaene Kago to the first spot in the U-84kg while Mogakolodi Motlhabi inched past veteran karatekas Moses Jones in the over 84kg division.
In the female individual kumite Kgomotso Chakabuya beat her opponents to the first spot in the U-50kg whiloe Oampata Gakemokgothu won the U-55kg.
Waabo Anwar won the U-61kg while Merylin Manthe and Tsholofelo Maduma won the over 68kg and U-68kg.
Ofentse Bakwadi and Lame Hetanang continued with their fine form in the male individual kata and female kata respectively. ENDS
