Unite to fight child abuse - child protection activist
23 Mar 2017
Stepping Stone International child protection coordinator, Ms Kereng Keateretse has urged parents and all stakeholders to unite against child abuse in the community.
Ms Keateretse said in an interview that Stepping Stone International was currently conducting child protection workshops around the country to equip parents, child protection committees and various government departments’ employees on how to fight, solve and deal with child abuse issues.
She said they were doing such under the whistle-blowing programme supported by the European Union with the objective to end teenage pregnancy, gender and family violence in this country.
Ms Keateretse said they had recently conducted child protection workshops in Bobonong, which were aimed at promoting child protection in the village, especially cases of teenage pregnancy, which used to be high in Bobonong schools.
She said parents, government employees and students who participated in the workshop were taught about child protection and how to report it to the relevant authorities who could in turn take action to stop child abuse based on Children’s Act.
Ms Keateretse said parents were also enlightened about the Children’s Act, adding that child abuse was dangerous in that it had long term effects on the child future.
Ms Keateretse encouraged parents and the community at large to report child abuse cases to the relevant authorities. ENDS
