Official urges farmers to market produce

23 Mar 2017

Head of Agri Business department in the North East District, Ms Emang Orapeleng has called upon farmers in the area to come in large numbers for the upcoming agricultural district market day to be held on March 31.

Ms Orapeleng made the call in an interview recently, noting that the forth agricultural market day of its kind would be held at the Botswana Horticultural Market grounds in Francistown.

She explained that it was crucial for the farmers to take part in this particular activity in large numbers since it was mandated to benefit and promote them in many ways.

Ms Orapeleng highlighted that the market day aimed at helping the farmers share their experiences, which could ultimately help them improve on their produce as well as to help them have access to potential traders for their commodities.

Additionally, she said the day also aimed at promoting local sales of fresh produce, thus curbing high importation of goods and commodities.

That, she explained, can only be achieved when farmers come forth in large numbers with their produce to be marketed.

This time around, Ms Orapeleng said they anticipated an increase of the participants following the good rains that poured across the country.

She noted that the past market day, which was held in December, was not successful due to the poor and unreliable rain for that season, resulting in low yield, adding that preparations for the day are going on smoothly. ENDS
