Nanny boosts income with weaving
23 Mar 2017
Thirty-seven-year-old, Ms Anna Maseko, a house nanny from Mothabaneng believes that her destination is entirely her responsibility.
The adage that there is no sweet without sweat is true reflection of what she believes in.
In an interview recently in Bobonong, Ms Maseko said she augmented her monthly pay by selling floor mats, which she weaved with wall hangers, baskets, other household ornaments and also makes brooms with the same reed.
Ms Maseko says she learnt how to weave from her late mother at a very tender age when she was doing Standard Four at Motlhabaneng Primary School.
She says that this has generated a better income for her family as she was now able to pay for her children’s education and also able to feed them without much hustle.
Ms Maseko notes that back then when she ventured into the weaving business they used to sell mokolwane brooms at P2, but over the years prices increased and now the brooms range from P20.
On a good business day, Ms Maseko says she makes up to P600, saying that most communities show tremendous support when it comes to reed products.
Like in any business, she has some challenges, especially during reed harvesting because of snakes, which tended choose reeds as their domicile.
Ms Maseko advised reed harvesters to be careful and wear protective clothing all the time.
She also called for more support from the community. ENDS
