23 Mar 2017

Retlhatloleng Primary School does not have serious shortage of accommodation as no one is sharing and some of the teachers stay in their own houses in Letlhakane.

Assistant Minister of Tertiary Education, Research, Science and Technology, Mr Fidelis Molao told Parliament on March 22 that Retlhatloleng primary school has 27 teachers including the school head and five non-teaching staff.

He stated that the school’s establishment reflects just 24 teachers; the three extra teachers are as a result of the schools expansion.

Mr Molao stated that the school has a total enrollment of 932 pupils with the teacher student ratio of 25/932 or 1:37 excluding school head and deputy who do not teach.

He further noted that two classes are taught outside noting that the schools results have improved over the past three years and currently standing at 69.5 per cent in ABC pass.

He said the school did not have any preschool and the enrolments for standard one intake for the past three years showed 112 in 2014, 125 in 2015 and 154 in 2016.

The assistant minister said the figures showed an increase in the number of students admitted at the school.

Mr Molao stated that in 2008, the school benefited from primary schools infrastructure back log eradication programme, indicating that additional classrooms and staff houses were constructed and the school had reached a maximum recommended size and as such there were no plans for further expansion.

MP for Boteti East, Mr Sethomo Lelatisitswe had asked the minister to update parliament on the status of Retlhatloleng Primary School in Letlhakane on issues of staffing outlook for both teaching and non-teaching staff and their accommodation.

He further asked the minister to give an update on student teacher ratio, student enrolment and classes taught under trees.

MP Lelatisitswe requested for an update on performance of the school in the PSLE for the past two years and also wanted to know if there are any plans to renovate school or expansion in the NDP 11 and DDP 8. ENDS
