World Earth hour March 25
22 Mar 2017
The Department of Energy (DOE) urges the nation to join millions of people across the globe on March 25 in switching off non-essential lights and other electrical appliances in office premises, businesses and homes for one hour (8:30pm-9:30pm) as a symbolic action to observe Earth Hour.
A news release from BGCIS states that by taking part in this global ‘Lights Out’ event, it will be acknowledgement of commitment to personal and operational actions to change climate change.
Earth Hour is a worldwide grassroots movement that started as a lights-off event in Sydney, Australia in 2007 to show support for climate change action.
“The event is now recognised globally as an initiative that encourages individuals, businesses and governments around the world to take accountability for their ecological footprint as well as to engage in dialogue and resource exchange that provides real solutions to our environmental challenges,” the release states.
In the lead up to Earth Hour 2017, the department also urges organisations and individuals to take a close look at ways in which they can operate more efficiently, waste less and reduce environmental footprint.
“Sustainable practices aren’t just good for the bottom line. We all have a stake in the future of our planet and must learn to operate in ways that do not deplete our world’s limited natural resources.” ENDS
