Community service develops spirit of volunteerism - Kwerepe
21 Mar 2017
Assistant Minister for Presidential Affairs, Governance and Public Administration, Mr Thato Kwerepe says community service day helped to develop a sense of volunteerism within the public service.
Speaking during the Office of the President community service day to refurbish Phase 4 children’s park on March 17, Mr Kwerepe said community service also developed a life-long habit of community involvement among individuals.
Mr Kwerepe said the Office of the President had always led by example in engaging in a variety of initiatives that supported and strengthened the community at large.
He said the office had so far undertaken a variety of projects such as backyard gardens, construction of shelter for the needy, renovation of VDC houses, donations of wheelchairs, blankets, clothing and refuse bins, including the refurbishment of recreational parks.
Mr Kwerepe said ‘since recreation is an essential part of human development’, his ministry found it fit to undertake a project which would enhance children’s talents.
He further highlighted that the projects had been made successful through partnerships from both within and outside government.
In an interview, Marulamantsi/Phase 4 ward Councillor, Mr Sergeant Kgosietsile commended the staff for taking time in their busy schedules to come and clean and decorate the park.
“Bushy, worn out parks are brooding units for social ills. They are a place where children are introduced to drugs, and I would like to thank the OP staff for giving this park a new life,” he said.
Mr Kgosietsile called on residents to have a sense of ownership of the park in order to maintain and take a good care of it.
The Office of the President also donated six balls for different sport codes to be used by children. ENDS
